Supreme Court Questions IIT Kharagpur Over Student Suicides, Seeks Accountability

On July 28, the Supreme Court questioned IIT Kharagpur over repeated student suicides, asking, “What is wrong with IIT KGP? Have you given a thought to it?”

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan raised the concern while hearing a suo motu case on student suicides at IIT Kharagpur and Sharda University.

The institute informed the Court that it has constituted a 10-member committee and established a counselling centre with a 24/7 helpline.

FIRs have been registered in both cases. The Court also took note of a recent suicide at IIT Delhi, where no FIR has been filed yet, and listed the matter after four weeks.
