Supreme Court Questions Lack of Attendance Mandate for Law Students

The Supreme Court expressed reservations over a 2025 Delhi High Court judgment which held that law students cannot be barred from examinations due to attendance shortages.

The bench observed that removing attendance requirements could reduce law college hostels to mere "boarding and lodging facilities."

While the Court issued notice on a plea by NMIMS challenging the ruling, it declined to stay the High Court’s order for now.

The controversy originated from the 2016 suicide of a student allegedly harassed over attendance, leading the High Court to prioritize student mental well-being over rigid regulations.
