Supreme Court Rules Against Misuse of Temporary Contracts

  • Case Name: Jaggo v. Union of India
  • Judge(s): Justice Vikram Nath and Prasanna B Varale
  • Advocate(s): Udian Sharma and Ors

The Supreme Court has recently ruled against government institutions that misuse temporary employment contracts, which can harm workers' rights and job security.

This judgment arose from a case involving four housekeeping staff at the Central Water Commission, working on temporary contracts for 20 years before being terminated in 2018.

The Court criticized this, comparing it to the gig economy, where workers lack security and benefits.

The Court ordered regular jobs for these workers and better job security in public sectors, to prevent similar abuses in the future.

The Court cited the Uma Devi case stating that temporary hiring harms workers' rights.
