Supreme Court Rules Unauthorised Sale of Railway Tickets via Fake IDs is an Offence

  • Case Name: Inspector, Railway Protection Force Kottayam v Mathew K Cheria

The Supreme Court has ruled that selling Indian Railways e-tickets through fake identities is a crime.

This decision arose from a case involving the abuse of multiple user IDs to purchase tickets, leading to significant financial loss and system abuse.

The court highlighted that while the Indian Railways Act under Section 143 addresses unauthorized ticket sales as an offense, it does not specifically mention the creation and abuse of multiple user IDs.

However, the bench concluded that there are still valid reasons to consider such actions illegal under the relevant legislation.
