Supreme Court Says "Cannot Ignore Pahalgam" While Hearing J&K Statehood Plea

On August 14, 2025, the Supreme Court heard a plea filed by Zahoor Ahmed Bhat and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, demanding restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood.

The Bench, led by CJI BR Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, remarked that “ground realities must be considered” and specifically flagged the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, stating it cannot be ignored.

The Centre was directed to respond within eight weeks. Petitioners contended that the delay undermines federalism, especially since elections have taken place with no security issues impeding governance.
