The Supreme Court held that the University Grants Commission (UGC) is the competent authority to decide the consequences of annulling illegal degrees, and not the courts.
The Court modified a Madras High Court order that had protected students who completed technical courses through distance learning under interim orders.
It directed UGC to examine the cases of such students in light of the principles laid down in Orissa Lift Irrigation Corporation Ltd v Rabi Sankar Patro (2018).
The Court also asked Annamalai University to furnish details of affected students for appropriate decision by UGC.
