The Supreme Court asked the Centre and several States to respond to a plea alleging that Bengali Muslim migrant workers from West Bengal are being detained as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants without proper verification.
The petition, filed by the West Bengal Migrant Workers Welfare Board, claims that a May 2025 Home Ministry letter enables misuse and arbitrary detention.
The Court stressed the need for a mechanism to verify the origin of migrant workers and suggested a nodal agency for coordination between States.
While refusing interim relief against detention, it stressed verification over summary action and has posted the matter for August 25.
