Supreme Court Seeks Centre's Response on Regulating Explicit Content on OTT and Social Media

  • Case Name: Uday Mahurkar v. Union of India

The Supreme Court has sought the Centre's response to a plea seeking regulation of sexually explicit content on OTT platforms and social media.

A Bench issued notices to X Corp, Netflix, Amazon, Ullu Digital, ALTBalaji, MUBI, Google, Apple, and Meta. The Court noted its limited role in the matter but stressed concerns about children’s exposure to inappropriate material.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta acknowledged the issue, stating that some regulations exist and that more are being considered.

The petitioner highlighted unchecked explicit content online, urging the establishment of a National Content Control Authority to protect young audiences from harmful exposure.
