The Supreme Court has decided to examine the creation, functioning, and regulation of private and deemed universities across the country.
The Court was hearing a petition arising from a dispute with Amity University over the refusal to change a student’s official name, which it has now converted into a PIL on the broader issue of regulatory oversight of private universities.
The Court added the Union of India, all States and Union Territories, and the University Grants Commission as respondents and directed them to file personally affirmed affidavits.
They must disclose the legal basis for establishing such universities, their governing bodies, admission and recruitment policies, regulatory oversight, grievance mechanisms and salary compliance.
