The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Registrar Generals of the Karnataka, Kerala, and Orissa High Courts on the establishment of Commercial Divisions handling admiralty law cases.
The Bench noted a 2022 Karnataka HC circular that set up Single-Judge Commercial Divisions at its benches. However, the Kerala and Orissa HCs reportedly lack similar divisions.
The case involves a vessel seized for recovering ₹17.84 crore with 2% interest.
The Court issued notices to the HCs and sought Attorney General R Venkataramani’s assistance.
The matter will be heard in March.
