The Supreme Court has asked the Central government to clarify the timeline for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and directed it to file its response within six weeks.
The interim order was passed in a batch of petitions challenging the 2019 bifurcation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, following the abrogation of Article 370.
While the abrogation was upheld earlier, the Constitution Bench had declined to decide on the validity of the bifurcation law after the Solicitor General assured that the Union Territory status was temporary.
