Supreme Court Seeks Governor and State’s Views on Vice-Chancellor Appointments in West Bengal

The Supreme Court has received a list of 12 candidates recommended by the Search-cum-Selection Committee for appointment as Vice-Chancellors to 12 universities in West Bengal.

The bench has sought the views of the Chancellor (Governor) and the State Government on these names, directing Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta to take instructions.

The move comes in light of a special leave petition that was filed by the State Government challenging the 2023 judgment of the Calcutta High Court, which upheld the interim appointments of Vice-Chancellors by the previous governor to 13 universities in his capacity as the Chancellor of these institutions.
