The Supreme Court has referred a petition seeking a separate personal law for Buddhists in India to the Law Commission for examination.
The bench, led by CJI Surya Kant, was hearing a PIL filed by the Buddhist Personal Law Action Committee, which sought amendments to certain personal laws allegedly inconsistent with Buddhist beliefs.
The court emphasized the need for a comprehensive study of the community's religious practices and legal requirements before taking any judicial steps regarding personal law issues concerning the Buddhist community.
The petition will be treated as a representation, and the Law Commission may invite the petitioners’ representatives to present their views, ensuring a comprehensive assessment before any recommendations are made.
