Supreme Court Slams MCD Over Illegal Conversions of Home into Commercial Properties in Chandni Chowk

The Supreme Court directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to stop unauthorised conversion of residential properties into commercial complexes in Chandni Chowk.

Hearing a petition on illegal constructions, the Court warned of criminal contempt proceedings against the MCD Officials for non-compliance with its directions.

The Court dismissed MCD's claim that the constructions were old, citing ongoing demolitions and unchecked developments. The court also rejected objections regarding the petitioner's citizenship, emphasizing that such technicalities cannot justify illegal constructions.

MCD was granted a week to submit a report. The court has asked the petitioner to suggest names for a Joint Inspection Committee. The next hearing is scheduled for May 23.
