Supreme Court Stays Ruling on New Aravalli Hills Definition Flagging Environmental Concerns

The Supreme Court has stayed its recent decision approving new definitions of the Aravalli Hills, noting that further clarification is needed due to possible environmental consequences.

Hearing a suo motu matter, the Court said an independent expert committee would be constituted to examine whether the revised demarcation could widen areas open to mining and lead to ecological damage.

It observed that such concerns require scrutiny before the directions are implemented. Until further orders, the Court kept its earlier directions as well as the committee’s recommendations in abeyance. Notices were issued to the Union Government and concerned States.

The matter is listed for further hearing in January 2026.
