The Supreme Court has stayed criminal defamation proceedings initiated by a Patna court against the India Today media group Chairman, Aroon Purie, over a 2024 televised debate discussing political developments in Bihar.
The petitioner argued that no specific imputation was made against him, and the proceedings violated journalistic freedom.
The complaint invoked Section 500A IPC (non-existent provision), lacked proper inquiry under Section 202 CrPC, and featured irregularities in summons under Section 200 CrPC.
The Patna High Court had earlier refused to quash the case. The Supreme Court’s stay highlights procedural lapses and misuse of defamation laws against media entities reporting widely discussed political speculation.
