The Supreme Court has initiated a suo motu case concerning investigative agencies summoning advocates for legal opinions given to clients. A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai will hear the matter on July 14.
This follows a Gujarat case where police summoned a lawyer representing an accused, prompting concerns about the impact on legal independence. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate faced backlash for summoning Senior Advocates Arvind Datar and Pratap Venugopal, later withdrawing the notices.
The Court aims to examine how such actions may undermine the legal profession and fair investigation processes.
