Supreme Court to Examine 50% Reservation Cap for Special SC Educational Institutions

The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to an Allahabad High Court ruling that struck down 70% reservation for Scheduled Castes in four special medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

A bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran issued notice on the special leave petition, which contends that institutions created under the Special Component Plan should be exempt from the 50% ceiling set by the Indra Sawhney judgment.

The case will decide whether the constitutional provision for promoting disadvantaged communities under Article 46 allows exceeding the general reservation cap in such institutions.
