The Supreme Court has said that it will hear the application made by the Union to modify the guidelines given in the 2014 'Shatrughan Chauhan' judgement to make them more favourable towards the victim.
The application was made back in 2020 in the context of the pending execution of death warrants of four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
The need for modifications was brought up in order to put an end to unnecessary and continuous filing of mercy petitions, curative petitions and reviews, which delay the process of justice.
The Centre also contended that the existing guidelines do not adequately address the irreparable mental trauma and agony faced by the victims and their family members.
