Supreme Court To Hear Petitions Challenging Electoral Roll Revision in Bihar on July 10

The Supreme Court has agreed to urgently list petitions challenging the Election Commission’s decision to carry out a  “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls.

Under the SIR guidelines, voters not included in the 2003 electoral roll are now required to submit documents proving their citizenship. For those born after December 2004, the directive mandates not only their own documents but also those of both parents.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, along with others, raised concerns that the strict deadline could result in large-scale voter deletions, even affecting individuals with longstanding voting records.

A Bench observed that since elections had not yet been notified, the timeline lacked sanctity. The matter is listed for hearing on July 10.
