Supreme Court Issues Notice on PIL Seeking Sub-Quota for Economically Weaker in Reserved Categories

The Supreme Court has issued notice on a PIL seeking sub-quotas for economically weaker candidates within existing reserved categories in government jobs and education.

The plea advocates for income-based priority for SC, ST, OBC, and EWS groups to ensure equitable distribution of benefits without altering the overall reservation percentages.

Petitioners argue that those who have risen socio-economically should not repeatedly benefit, and opportunities should reach those still disadvantaged.

Citing State of Punjab v. Davinder Singh, where a 7-judge bench upheld sub-classification within SCs, the PIL advocates a merit-cum-means model. The Court will hear arguments amid expectations of strong opposition from various stakeholders.
