The Supreme Court is set to hear in July 2025 a plea challenging the non-payment of stipends to MBBS interns.
The petitioners' counsel highlighted to Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih that many medical students are receiving no stipend during their compulsory internships. The case, initially scheduled before Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia on May 19, was not heard as planned.
CJI Gavai assured that the matter would be listed during Justice Dhulia's bench sessions in July.
Previously, in April 2024, the Court directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to provide comprehensive details on stipend payments across all states, noting non-compliance with earlier directives.
