Supreme Court to Hear Plea Seeking Digital Verification of Bail Sureties to Avoid Delay in Prisoner Release

The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a plea seeking the digital verification of bail sureties to expedite the release of undertrial prisoners and reduce overcrowding in jails.

The petition highlights that manual verification processes often cause prolonged delays, violating the right to liberty.

The court will consider directives for states to adopt technology-driven solutions, ensuring swift and secure authentication of sureties while upholding judicial oversight.

The petitioner also requested personal reliefs, including the return of his passport, modification of travel restrictions in his bail conditions, and an inquiry into alleged mistreatment at Tihar Jail. The matter will now be heard on September 15.
