Supreme Court to Hear Petitions Against Appointment of Election Commissioners' Law on May 14

  • Case Name: Dr Jaya Thakur & Ors. v. Union of India & Anr

The Supreme Court has scheduled May 14, 2025, to hear petitions challenging the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023.

The petition challenged the removal of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the selection panel for Election Commissioners, contending that it breaches constitutional principles and compromises the independence of the Election Commission.

Citing Anoop Baranwal, the petitioner argues for reinstating judicial involvement in the appointment process of Election Commissioners to ensure free and fair elections.

The Court had previously declined to stay appointments made under the new law, but has now prioritized the matter for a final hearing after multiple adjournments.
