Supreme Court Upholds 2003 Law Ending KSRTC's Monopoly Over Bus Operation in Karnataka

  • Case Name: Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation vs. Karnataka

The Supreme Court has upheld the 2003 law that dismantled KSRTC’s monopoly over bus operations in Karnataka, allowing private players to enter the market.

The Court emphasized that the law was introduced to break the statutory monopoly created by the Karnataka Contract Carriages Act (KCCA) and to enhance competition in public transport.

With this ruling, private bus operators can now legally operate alongside KSRTC, improving connectivity and service efficiency across Karnataka.

The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of Section 3 of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Act, 2003, which repeals the Karnataka Contract Carriages (Acquisition) Act, 1976.
