The Supreme Court has ruled that NEET UG qualification is mandatory for students pursuing MBBS abroad. The rule was introduced in 2018 by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The court stated, that making NEET UG mandatory is fair and transparent to ensure students meet certain standards to practice in India.
Petitioner argued that the Medical Council Act, 1956 was not amended before implementing the NEET UG mandate. However, the SC dismissed the plea stating that under Section 33 of the MCI Act, MCI had an authority to enforce it.
The court emphasizes that students who were admitted abroad must comply with regulations. The rule applies only to those who want to study medicine abroad and practice in India.
