Supreme Court Upholds Calcutta HC Order On Residential CCTV Privacy Violation

The Supreme Court has upheld a Calcutta High Court ruling that installing CCTV cameras in residential areas of a shared home without the consent of other co-occupants violates the right to privacy.

In this case, 15 cameras were set up to monitor valuable art and artefacts in the building. However, the Court found that five of them were directed toward the petitioner’s living area, resulting in an invasion of his privacy.

While the appellant contended that restricting cameras would compromise security, the Court emphasized that an individual's right to privacy within their residence cannot be overridden without proper consent from co-inhabitants.
