The Supreme Court dismissed a petition that challenged the rule allowing students to register as voters in the city where they study instead of their hometown.
The petitioner argued that students from different states might not understand local political issues and shouldn’t be allowed to vote there.
The court referred to clause 13.6.1.3 of the ECI’s manual on electoral rolls, which provides detailed provisions for students residing in hostels, messes, or lodges.
SC dismissed the plea saying that the Election Commission of India already provides a mechanism for students residing outside their constituency to register as voters at their current location.
