The Supreme Court has directed the Karnataka government to ensure the release of Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, emphasising that a mob cannot veto a CBFC‑certified film.
The Bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan transferred the case from the Karnataka High Court and instructed the State to file its response by June 18.
The court asserted that “the rule of law demands that any film with CBFC clearance must be released” and warned that threats of arson or violence cannot prevail.
The Court rejected demands for an apology as irrelevant and scheduled the next hearing for June 19, and stressed the need to strike a balance between public order concerns and creative freedom in a democratic society.
