Supreme Court Warns State Bar Councils Over Excess Enrolment Fees

The Supreme Court warned all State Bar Councils to comply with its directive prohibiting the collection of enrolment fees beyond the prescribed ₹750.

The Bench reiterated that enrolment charges must strictly adhere to Section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961.

The warning arose from a contempt plea filed by a law graduate who was asked to pay an additional ₹4,650 under miscellaneous heads and was denied the return of her original documents until payment.

The Court emphasised that non-compliance with its earlier order would invite strict consequences for the Councils
