Supreme Court Wishes Judicial Appointments Shared the Speed of Election Commissioners

During a hearing challenging the Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2023, the Supreme Court remarked that it wished judicial appointments were cleared as swiftly as those of Election Commissioners.

The Bench noted the "speed" with which the executive finalized EC selections, shortlisting 200 names and appointing two within 24 hours. 

Justice Datta observed, "We wish such speed is shown in the appointment of judges, especially High Court judges."

While the Court remained skeptical of motives attributed to the Union's timeline, it continues to examine the validity of the new selection panel, which replaces the CJI with a Union Minister.
