The Supreme Court has acquitted three adults who were convicted as minors in 2007 for the murder of a 10-year-old boy, ruling that their guilt was not proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Court noted that the conviction rested entirely on circumstantial and speculative evidence.
A Division Bench also criticised the Uttarakhand High Court for procedural lapses and its failure to examine scientific reports. The trio had been convicted by a Kashipur court in 2014 for allegedly strangling the boy in a mango orchard. In 2017, the High Court upheld the verdict.
The Supreme Court set aside both orders, emphasising the lack of credible evidence.
