The Telangana High Court has quashed a 2022 gag order that barred media platforms like The News Minute, Tolivelugu, and V6 Velugu from reporting on Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd's alleged role in financing an IAS officer’s daughter’s lavish wedding.
The Court called the local court’s order a misuse of judicial process, highlighting that it infringed on press freedom and failed to meet constitutional standards under Article 19(2). It noted Megha Engineering's delayed filing of a defamation suit and concealment of ongoing litigation on the same matter.
The bench emphasized that gag orders must be rare, well-reasoned, and not used to silence public interest reporting.
