The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved two Bills to implement the "One Nation, One Election" (ONOE) initiative.
The Bills propose simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, alongside a unified electoral roll.
Constitutional amendments, including Article 82A, will establish procedures for synchronized elections.
Challenges remain, as critics argue ONOE may undermine federalism by shortening elected representatives' terms in case of mid-term state government collapse. The Bills, based on ex-President Ramnath Kovind’s committee recommendations, await parliamentary clearance and may face legal scrutiny over their impact on stable governance and democratic principles.
