Union Cabinet Approves Proposal to Rename Kerala as ‘Keralam’

The Union Cabinet approved a proposal to rename the State of Kerala as “Keralam” and initiated the constitutional process to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution.

The decision follows a unanimous resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly on June 24, 2024, seeking the change to reflect the Malayalam name of the State. The President will now refer the proposed Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the Assembly under Article 3 for its views.

After receiving the Assembly’s response, the Union government may introduce the Bill in Parliament.

If passed, the Constitution will officially record the State’s name as “Keralam.”
