The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, following a nearly 14-hour debate.
Introduced by Kiren Rijiju, the bill aims to modernize waqf administration and reduce litigation. It proposes approximately 40 amendments to the existing Waqf Act, 1995, including non-Muslims in waqf boards and applying the Limitation Act, 1963, to waqf properties.
The bill was passed with 288 votes in favor and 232 against. Opposition members criticized the bill, alleging it violates Article 25 of the Constitution and interferes with religious affairs.
The government clarified that the bill intends to ensure effective management of waqf properties without infringing on religious rights.
