Universities Must Regulate Student Political Activities to Prevent Campus Violence: Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court has directed all universities in the State to frame a comprehensive regulatory mechanism to control and regulate student political activities on campus, aiming to prevent violence and maintain academic discipline.

The direction was issued while hearing a batch of writ petitions, including a PIL filed after a student’s death at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.

The Court emphasised that political influence should not disrupt academic pursuits and asked university syndicates to formulate clear rules, taking guidance from the Mahatma Gandhi University Students’ Code of Conduct Rules, 2005.

Universities were instructed to place the proposed rules before the Court for further review.
