An Uttar Pradesh court has refused to direct the registration of an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his alleged remarks about the Sikh community.
The court held that Gandhi’s statement, when read in its full context, showed no intent to promote enmity or offend religious sentiments. The remarks were made during an event in the United States on September 9, 2024, while he was addressing a Sikh audience member.
The Court emphasised the importance of free speech. The Court said that selective excerpts would not justify criminal action without proof of deliberate malice or incitement.
