'Operation Sindoor' Trademark Applications Filed in US, UK, India

Following India’s cross-border military strike after the Pahalgam terror attack, the term “Operation Sindoor” has seen multiple trademark filings across India, the US, and the UK.

Applications filed under Class 41 of the Nice Classification covers media, apparel, and entertainment, have come from private entities and individuals, including a now-withdrawn one by Reliance.

The filings highlight territorial trademark rights and implications under the Madrid Protocol.

As per Section 11(2) of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, “well-known trademarks” may be protected even without registration, but India lacks automatic protection for military operation names.

Registries will now examine potential violations before approval.
