A US Court has granted summary judgment in favour of OpenAI, dismissing the defamation suit filed by radio host Mark Walters.
He alleged that ChatGPT defamed him by falsely stating that he was a plaintiff in a 2023 federal lawsuit involving the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and that he had been accused of financial misconduct. However, he was not a party to the lawsuit.
The Court highlighted that OpenAI had included clear warnings about possible hallucinations and had implemented safeguards against misinformation, and since Walters did not suffer actual damages and that the information was promptly identified as false.
The Court concluded that holding OpenAI liable would impose strict liability, not supported under current defamation law principles.
