Uttarakhand Becomes First State in India to Implement Uniform Civil Code

Uttarakhand has become the first Indian state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) following the passage of the Uttarakhand UCC Bill, 2024.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the rollout and launched a portal for applications under the new law.

Key features include mandatory registration of live-in relationships and marriages, equal inheritance rights for men and women, a ban on polygamy, halal, and iddat, and provisions for digital registration services.

The law excludes Scheduled Tribes but applies to Uttarakhand residents living outside the state.

The UCC aims to ensure gender equality and streamline family law governance.
