Visually Impaired Candidates Eligible to Participate for Judicial Services Exam : Supreme Court

The Supreme Court allowed the visually impaired candidates to join the judicial services in India and struck down Rule 6A of the Madhya Pradesh Judicial Service Examination Rules, 1994, which excluded visually impaired and low-vision candidates.

In a 122-page judgment, Justice Mahadevan stated that visually impaired candidates are eligible for judicial service. The court emphasized the principle of reasonable accommodation, as per international conventions and the 2016 Act, which ensures fair opportunities for persons with disabilities.

The Supreme Court also extended the same relief to visually impaired candidates in Rajasthan and mandated a three-year practice requirement before joining the judicial service.
