What is a Writ Petition Under Article 226 of Indian Constitution?

A writ petition under Article 226 allows a person to approach a High Court to protect fundamental rights and other legal rights. The High Court can issue writs such as habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, certiorari, and quo warranto.

This power enables the Court to review actions of the State, public authorities, and government bodies.

The Court said Article 226 has a wider scope than Article 32, as it covers both fundamental and legal rights.

A person can file a writ petition when no effective alternative remedy is available or when immediate judicial intervention is required to prevent injustice.
