What is the Doctrine of Territorial Nexus?

The Doctrine of Territorial Nexus means that a State law can apply to persons, property, or events outside its territory if there is a sufficient connection (nexus) with the State.

Under Article 245 of the Indian Constitution, a law is valid if the subject matter has a real and reasonable link with the State enacting it.

This doctrine prevents arbitrary extra-territorial legislation while allowing justified reach.
