What is the Doctrine of Ultra Vires?

The Doctrine of Ultra Vires means “beyond powers." It holds that any act done by an authority outside the powers granted to it by law is invalid and void.

In constitutional and administrative law, actions of the legislature, executive, or statutory bodies must stay within their legal authority.

If they exceed it, courts can strike down such actions to uphold the rule of law.
