“Why not work?” Supreme Court to MBA graduate seeking ₹12 crore alimony

The Supreme Court recently reserved its order in a matrimonial dispute after a woman sought ₹12 crore and a flat in Mumbai from her estranged husband.

A Bench led by CJI BR Gavai questioned the demand, noting the marriage lasted only 18 months and the woman is an MBA graduate with IT experience.

“You are well educated. Why not work?” the CJI asked. 

The Court observed that exaggerated claims cannot be made by those capable of employment. The woman was given two options: a lump sum of ₹4 crore or the flat, free of encumbrances.
