Supreme Court Allows Wife to Join Husband’s Defamation Case

  • Case Name: Spunklane Media Pvt Ltd v. Nivedita Singh & Ors.

The Supreme Court has upheld the Karnataka High Court's decision allowing a wife to be added as a co-plaintiff in her husband's defamation lawsuit against Spunklane Media Private Limited, owner of The News Minute portal.

The case raised the question of whether a wife can acquire a better title to restrain the media from publishing content about her husband.

The Court said that a husband and wife share a “common family reputation,” and if one is defamed, it affects the other too.

The court noted, "When you attack one, it impairs the social reputation and emotions of the other."
