The social media platform X has acknowledged lapses in content moderation and assured the Indian government that it will comply fully with Indian law, according to official sources.
The development follows scrutiny by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology over vulgar and explicit content, including material generated by X’s AI chatbot Grok.
As corrective steps, X has blocked around 3,500 posts and deleted over 600 accounts, and stated that it will prevent obscene imagery going forward.
MeitY is reviewing X’s compliance report and has warned that failure to meet due diligence obligations under the IT Act and IT Rules could put X’s safe harbour protection under Section 79 at risk.
