Supreme Court Suggests Advocates to Mention AIBE Status in Vakalatnama for Transparency

The Supreme Court suggested that the Bar Council of India (BCI) should make it mandatory for advocates enrolled after 2010 to state in their vakalatnama whether they have cleared the All India Bar Examination (AIBE).

This aims to improve transparency and regulatory compliance under Section 49 of the Advocates Act, 1961.

The Court referred to its 2023 Constitution Bench ruling, enforceable under Article 141 of the Constitution, affirming that only AIBE-qualified law graduates can only practice.

The BCI was also asked to clarify its stand on reviewing the judgment concerning enrolment fees. The matter will be heard again after BCI  files its response.
