Supreme Court Seeks State’s Response in Bail Plea of Delhi Riots Accused Tasleem Ahmed

The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought the Delhi government’s response to a bail plea filed by Tasleem Ahmed, an accused in the 2020 Delhi Riots conspiracy case. A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P.B. Varale issued notice in the matter.

Ahmed, who is charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), was denied bail by the trial court in 2022 and by the Delhi High Court in September last year. His case was later de-tagged from other co-accused matters at his counsel’s request.

Ahmed contends that he was merely an anti-CAA protester but was arrested on terror charges on June 24, 2020.

He has sought bail citing prolonged incarceration and delay in trial.
